Calexico is a city in southern California, at the Mexican border. It is a port of entry from Mexicali, in Baja California across the border. Smuggling has long been a problem. It is also a trade center for the southern part of the fertile Imperial Valley.

Tourism is central to Calexico's economy. There are several interesting sites in Calexico. They include Hotel De Anza; Calexico Carnegie Library, which was built in 1918; US Inspection Station was historically a port of entry, but nowadays it is closed; Camp Salvation was established as a refugee camp in 1849; Camp John H. Beacom was a semipermanent WWI camp. It was closed in 1920; Camp Calexico was another WWI camp and Mount Signal Solar is one of the largest PV solar farms in the world. Red Ribbon Week is a national observance dedicated to spreading awareness about the prevention of drugs and violence. It originated in Calexico in the 1980's.
