The Central Tian Shan includes some of the highest peaks of the Tian Shan Mountains. The area is in the southeast of Kyrgyzstan and straddles the borders with Chine and the southeastern tip of Kazakhstan. Many peaks in the Central Tian Shan rise over 5,000 m (16,400 ft) and include Kyrgyzstan's highest mountain, 7,439 m (24,406 ft) high Jengish Chokusu (Pik Pobedy or Victory Peak) on the border with China. The region's most beautiful mountain is probably Khan-Tengri, which rises 6,995 m (22,944 ft) and sits on the Kyrgyzstan-Kazakhstan border.

The Central Tian Shan is excellent for trekking and mountaineering. Trips to the area can be arranged in Bishkek and in Karakol. Several companies operate helicopters that will bring you to the mountains, although it is also possible to use 4WD vehicles or walk. You will have to bring your own equipment though, including a good sleeping bag, tent and supplies. The months of July and August are the warmest period at these altitudes, but even then it can be freezing cold, so be prepared.
