Dāndōng lies on the northern bank of the Yelu River, which is the border between China and North Korea. Its name means 'Red East' and the city was formerly called Andong.
Jinjiangshan Park is located on Jinjiang Mountain (锦江山) and offers panoramic views over Dāndōng and into the North Korean city of Sinŭiju, on the other side of the river. The two cities are connected by the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge. At night, the Chinese side of the bridge is lit up with colourful lights, the North Korean side remains dark. About 100 m downstream from that bridge is the Yalu River Broken Bridge, which was destroyed by American bombing during the Korean War.
Dāndōng is a laid back city and can easily be explored on foot, although there is little of interest to travellers. Rides on speed boats to get a closer look at Sinŭiju are available in Dāndōng. You are not allowed to get ashore in North Korea though.
The Korean War Museum is a 'Memorial of the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea'. Wulong mountain scenic area is located in Dāndōng.
In the vicinity of Dāndōng are the Dagushan Scenic Area, the Shuifeng Dam in Kuandian Manchu Autonomous County and Fenghuang Mountain in Fengcheng. Some 25 km (16 mi) northwest of town is the Longshan and Wulongbei spa. Black Creek Reservoir is located in the Yuanbao District, 10 km (6 mi) from Dāndōng. In the vicinity of the reservoir are several spas, sanatoriums and a summer resort.
Hotels and restaurants are available in the city. Dāndōng is 640 km east of Beijing, in the southeast of the Liaoning province.
