Dallol (ዳሎል)
photo

Dallol is a ghost town in the Afar Region of northern Ethiopia. It is an abandoned Italian sulfur mine and most buildings are in ruins. Dallol used to be one of the most remote places on Earth, but in 2015, paved roads were constructed in the area, which has made access to the town easier. Despite of this, the most important mode of transport are the camel caravans that travel to the area to collect salt.

The town is not far from the highly active hydrothermal system of Dallol, where you can see numerous springs, terrace systems, fumaroles and ponds with unearthly coloured water and intricate mineral patterns.
