The village of Esch-sur-Sûre, or Esch-Sauer, is perched spectacularly on a rocky outcrop in the Sûre River. Behind the hamlet is a steep cliff with a ruined castle on the top.

Esch-sur-Sûre is surrounded by the Sauer River. Just west of town and upstream is the artificial Upper Sauer Lake, the largest lake in Luxembourg. The lake was formed after the river was dammed in the 1960s.

There is a beautiful 10th-century castle in Esch-sur-Sûre.

There are several hotels and restaurants in Esch-sur-Sûre, but most people opt to stay in nearby Wiltz, where more amenities are available. Esch-sur-Sûre is 45 km northwest from the city of Luxembourg.
