Fort Henry

Fort Henry was a Confederate fortification on the Tennessee River, in the north of Tennessee, not far from the Kentucky line. It was the site of the first major Union victory of the Civil War. The fort was attacked and reduced to rubble by Union gunboats under the command of Commodore Andrew Foote. Confederate commander General Lloyd Tilghman, foresaw his defeat and sent the bulk of his force to Fort Donelson before he surrendered. On 6 February 1862, General Ulysses S. Grant captured the fort.
The ramains of Fort Henry are 120 km northwest of Nashville and 1020 km southwest of Washington D.C.
