The Harz Mountains offer hiking possibilities in the summer, while skiing is possible during the winter, even though the mountains are not as high as the Alps and most people only do cross-country skiing there. It is far less crowded than the alpine resorts.

The name 'Harz' derives from the middle high German word of Hardt, or Hart, which means forested hills. The highest peak of the Harz Mountains is the Brocken. The Naturpark Harz has good hiking facilities, but not so many that it would spoil the adventure of hiking. Cycling is also possible.

There are many spa towns scattered throughout the Harz area. Accommodation is available in most villages in the region.
