Helan Shan (Helan Mountains) is a mountainous area in the autonomous region of Ningxia Hui. The region is also known as the Alashan Mountains. The mountains stretch for some 200 km (120 mi) parallel to the Yellow River, with the river flowing to the east of the mountains. In the north, the river flows on their western side. The highest peak in the Helan Mountains is 3,556 metres (11,667 ft) high.
There are numerous walking trails, as well as interesting sights, such as the 14-storey high pagodas of Baisikou, which boast statuettes of Buddha and the Western Xia Mausoleums, where you can see 72 tombs from the Xia kingdom that was later decimated by Genghis Khan.
You can also see ancient Rock Art in the Helan Mountains.
