Ilha do São Antão

São Antão is the greenest and most beautiful island of Cabo Verde. It lies north of São Vicente and it's ideal for hiking. The northern part of the island is covered with trees, but the southern part is relatively dry. Most of the pine trees of the island's interior were planted in the 1950s. The villages on the island are not of any special interest, but the more viable environment has allowed more indigenous people to stay, making it the most unspoilt island in the archipelago.

A trip from the town of Porto Novo to Ribeira Grande is an amazing experience. You will have to cross the Delgadinho (the slim one), an edge of rock, not much wider than a bus, from which on both side you can look down about 1000 meters. The village of Paúl has well preserved Portuguese architecture.

The island of São Antão is connected to Mindelo on São Vicente by air and by ferry.
