Jackson (North Carolina)

When the county of Northampton was created in 1741, a courthouse was built at a central location. A settlement called Northampton Courthouse developed around the courthouse. In 1826, the town's name was changed to Jackson in honour of General Andrew Jackson, who would later become the 7th president of the United States.

Points of interest

The Jackson Historic District developed between 1825 and 1953. There are numerous historic buildings in the neighborhood. It is bounded by Atherton Street, Picard Street, Buxton Street and the northern town limit line.
- The Amis-Bragg House was built around 1840. It is located at 203 Thomas Bragg Drive.
- The Atlas Oil Company Building was completed in 1925.
- The Bank of Northampton opened in 1928.
- Bowers Hardware Store opened in 1927.
- The Church of the Saviour was built between 1896 and 1898 in the Gothic Revival style. The adjacent cemetery was established in 1853. The church is located at the corner of Church and Calhoun streets.
- Faison House was built around 1825.
- The Farmer's Cotton Gin Complex.
- Jackson Baptist Church was consecrated in 1881.
- Jackson Town Hall.
- Jackson United Methodist Church was inaugurated in 1937.
- Judge Robert Peebles House was built in the 1890s. It has been converted into a museum.
- Kennedy's Five Cents to Five Dollars Store dates from around 1930.
- Lewis Drug Store opened in 1930.
- The Northampton County Courthouse Square comprises several buildings of the courthouse complex. The oldest of the buildings date from 1831, while the courthouse itself was constructed in 1858. The Northampton County Courthouse Square is located on Jefferson Street, between Atherton and Brown streets.
- The Selden-Boone House was built around 1900.
- St. Catherine's Hall dates from 1848.
Mowfield
Verona was built in 1855. It is also a plantation house and it is also located on US 158, 3.2 km (2 mi) west of town.

Jackson is located in the northeast of North Carolina.
