Jackson (Wyoming)

The area around present day Jackson was inhabited by indigenous peoples upon the arrival of the first European and American settlers at the end of the 18th century. A settlement was established there and it was named Jackson in 1894.

The first ski resort was established there in 1930. Nowadays there are 3 large ski resorts around Jackson:

Grand Targhee is located 68 km (42 mi) from Jackson, on the western side of the Teton Range. The resort opened in 1969.
Jackson Hole Mountain opened in 1966. It is located 19 km (12 mi) north of Jackson.
Snow King Mountain was the first ski resort in Jackson. It is located at the southeastern fringe of town.

Points of interest

The Center for the Arts was founded in 1991. Its current building was completed in 2007.
George Washington Memorial Park was laid out in 1934. It is located in the center of town.
The National Elk Refuge was established in 1912 to protect one of the largest elk herds in the United States. The refuge borders Jackson and in the winter, horse-drawn sleigh rides are available to view the herd. The park is contiguous with Bridger-Teton National Forest and Grand Teton National Park.
The National Museum of Wildlife Art has a collection of wildlife artworks, both indoors and outdoors. It is located at 2820 Rungius Road, on a hill overlooking the National Elk Refuge. The museum was established in 1987.
Snow King Observatory and Planetarium opened in 2024. It is located at 100 East Snow King Avenue, at the summit of Snow King Mountain.

Jackson also acts as a gateway community for Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park.

Several festivals are organized in Jackson every year, including the Elkfest, where elk antlers are auctioned and the Grand Teton Music Festival, which is a classical music festival.

There are many hotels and restaurants in Jackson. The region gets very busy with skiers during the winters and visitors to the national parks in summer.

Jackson is located in the west of Wyoming, 560 km northwest from Cheyenne.
