The city of Jos is situated on the Jos Plateau, an elevated area with a refreshing climate. The area consists mostly of green hills. Jos is commonly referred to as 'J-Town'. During British colonial times, large depisits of cassiterite, the main ore for tim, were discovered in the area. As a result, Jos became an important centre for tin mining.

The city's main attraction is the Jos Museum, which was founded in 1952. Unfortunately it has fallen into disrepair, but nevertheless it's still worth a visit. The museum includes the so-called pottery hall, where you can see an exceptional collection of beautifully crafted pottery from all over Nigeria. Some of the artefacts date from 500 BC to 200 AD.

It also incorporates the Museum of Traditional Nigerian Architecture, where you can see a number of replicas of important Nigerian buildings. The real buildings have either been demolished, or entrance to them is prohibited, so this is a good place to see what they actually look(ed) like. Some of the replicas include the Kano Wall and the Zaria Mosque. There are also examples of typical huts and villages of Nigeria's tribes.

The museum also exhibits artefacts related to the railway and tin mining. The Jos Zoo is also on the same grounds.

There is a large, covered market in Jos and the city also boasts the Jos Polo Club, Jos Stadium, Jos Golf Course and a very distinctive mosque.

Accommodation is widely available and there are numerous restaurants in town.

Several minibuses leave from the market to other places in the area, but most transportation can be found at the motor park, just north of town. When driving into, or out from Jos, traffic encounters very steep sloppy bends and breathtaking mountainous sceneries that are typical for the plateau landform.

The railway station is in the south of town, close to both the market and the Jos Museum. Jos is 205 km northeast of Abuja. Lagos is 715 km to the southwest.
