Kanyabayonga, or Kanya-Bayonga, is a major truck stop on the route between Butembo and Goma. The trucks wait there until the morning, as they are not allowed to drive through the Virunga National Park at night.

There is a busy market in Kanyabayonga that also serves as truck park. There are several hotels in town, as well as places where you can get food. Kanyabayonga is in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 1,605 km northeast of Kinshasa and close to the border with Uganda.

The region has suffered from continued violence between the army and rival militias since 1993.
