Khajuraho is a laid back town in northern Madhya Pradesh. The town is internationally known for its temples. There are temples for everything, sun gods, sacred bulls and even sex. Many temples are decorated with stone figures that suggest all kinds of erotic possibilities. Many temples are embellished with some of the finest handiwork from the Chandela period. After 500 years, Chandela rule came to an end when Islam arrived.

The most interesting temples are those in the so-called Western Group. Most of the temples resemble mountain peaks from the outside; curvilinear towers are surrounded by smaller ones. They are adorned with two or three rows of superimposed gods, goddesses, kings and other important figures, as well as couples in erotic positions and even forms of bestiality are depicted. Inside the decorations are just as marvelous (and erotic). A free-standing cult image can be found in the inner sanctum of most temples.

Every year in March a dance festival is held on the site. Khajuraho has bus connections with Agra, Ghansi, and Jhansi. The latter has the nearest railway station. It is also possible to fly to Khajuraho from Delhi and Agra. Accommodation and restaurants are available in town. Khajuraho is 490 km southeast of Delhi.
