Indigenous people have been living in the region since at least 10000 BC. Laramie was settled in 1868 with the arrival of the railroad. Fresh-water springs and the nearby river made it an excellent place for a settlement. Laramie grew with the development of the surrounding ranch country and local mining enterprises.

The city is a commercial, railroad and industrial center for a livestock and timber region. Laramie has numerous rail yards, sawmills, cement and brick factories, as well as meatpacking plants. Tourism is an important economic activity.

Points of interest

Laramie is located in the Laramie Vlley and surrounded by mountain ranges. There are numerous skiing, hunting and fishing areas in the vicinity. The city is the seat of the University of Wyoming.

Laramie is on the Laramie River in the southeast of Wyoming, 60 km west of and some 2,445 km west of Washingtin D.C.
