The historic town of Longford, not far from Launceston in the north of Tasmania has been classified by Australia's National Trust. The region around Longford is predominantly agricultural.

There are several historic buildings in Longford, including the sandstone Christ Church with its square tower, lancet windows and buttresses. it was built in 1839. The cemetery includes many prominent local family's graves. The Queen's Arms Hotel was built in 1835 in the Old Colonial Georgian style. The 1846 Blenheim Hotel was built in Georgian style. Tattersalls Hotel dates from 1846 and is nowadays home to the Longford Library. The former Racecourse Hotel was originally meant to be Longford's railway station, but has housed a provate hospital before it became a hotel. The building dates from 1838 and is now a B&B.

Longford is on the confluence of the Macquarie River and the South Esk River, 170 km north of Hobart and about 700 km south of Canberra. The South Esk River is spanned by the 120-m long (390 ft) Longford Railway Bridge that was inaugurated in 1871.
