Madikeri (Mercara)
Madikeri is also known as Mercara. It is the capital of the Kodagu (Coorg) region in southwestern India. The surrounding area is consists of scenic mountains and hills that are covered with lush vegetation. The region is excellent for trekking. There are several places of interest in and around Madikeri, including:
- Abbey Falls.
- Gaddide is also known as Raja's Tomb.
- The General Thimmaiah War Museum.
- Madikeri Church.
- Madikeri Fort.
- Mandalpatti viewpoint is located at the summit of the 1,250 m high peak of Mandalpatti. It is part of the Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, some 18 km north of Madikeri. The views from the top are beautiful. Mandalpatti is also known as Mugilu Pete.
- Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary.
- Raja's Seat is a construction that was used by the Kings and the Queens of Kodagu, who ruled Karnataka from 1600 to 1834. The building features a viewpoint that offers excellent views over the surrounding area. Raja's Seat stands in the middle of the Gandhi Mantap garden.
- The Sri Omkareshwara Temple.
Madikeri is a good place to stay if you want to explore the surrounding area.
Until 1956 the region was an independent state and the differences in habits and customs with other towns in the area is striking.
The best time to visit is between November and March, when treks can be organized. Accommodation is available in town. Madikeri is 1,770 km south of Delhi and it is a UNESCO world heritage site.
