photo

The volcanic island of Mago is located in the northwestern section of Fiji's Lau Archipelago. The island measures 22 km² (8.5 sq mi), making it one of the largest privately-owned islands in the southwestern Pacific Ocean.

In the 8160s, a cotton plantation was established on Mago island. By 1884, a well-established sugar cane plantation, including a sugar mill, was located there. In 1895, the sugar mill was shut down. In 2005, actor Mel Gibson bought the island.

Mago is 23 km (14 mi) southwest from the small island of Namalata and about 270 km (168 mi) northeast from Suva.
