Mahabaleshwar (महाबलेश्वर)

The hill station of Mahabaleshwar was the summer capital of the Bombay presidency during the days of the Raj. It sits on an altitude of almost 1,400 meters and is excellent for hiking. There are many beautiful views over the surrounding area. During the rainy (monsoon) season it receives about 6 meters of water in just three months on average.

The Krishna River, which is considered sacred by Hindus, has its origin near Mahabaleshwar. For that reason the city has become a place of pilgrimage.

Points of interest

Arthur's Seat is located in the vicinity of Mahabaleshwar. It sits on the edge of a 600 m high escarpment and provides fantastic views over the coastal plains. There are numerous waterfalls nearby, including the Lingmala Waterfall. The area around Arthur's Seat is also good for hiking and there are numerous trails including the Lady Willingdon Gallop and the Duchess Ride.
Other view points include Bombay Point, Kates Point and Elphinston Point.
The Mahadeo Temple is located in Old Mahabaleshwar.
Pratapgarh Fort.
Also not far from town is the artificial Venna Lake, where you can rent boats and do some fishing. You can also find a ruined Hindu temple there.
Wilson Point is the highest point around Mahabaleshwar. It is 1,439 m high and its offers great views over the surrounding area. It was named after Leslie Wilson, who was the Governor of the Bombay Presidency in the 1920s.

There are several hotels and restaurants in Mahabaleshwar. The town is 1,210 km southwest of New Delhi.
