Makin Island, or Makin Atoll, consists of several small islets, which are not far from Butaritari. The islets are:
Aonibike
Bikin Eitei
Kiebu
Little Makin
Onne
Tebua Tarawa
The islets are littered with war relics that remained there after fierce fighting in 1942. A group of U.S. Marines slipped in behind Japanese lines to distract Japanese attention from the real front at the Solomons.
