Mysuru (Mysore)

Mysuru, or Mysore, is a lovely city with a pleasant climate. The city is known throughout the region for its silk, sandalwood and incense industries.
Mysuru was the seat of the maharajas of Mysuru, from 1399 until Indian independence in 1947. The maharaja's state covered about a third of present-day Karnataka.
Places of interest
- The principal attraction in Mysuru is the Maharaja's Indo-Saracenic Amba Vilas Palace, or Mysuru Palace. It is located on Sayyaji Rao Road and it has a beautiful stained glass kaleidoscope, numerous mirrors and solid silver doors. It is the center of the Dasara festivities, which take place each year in October.
- The other major attraction in Mysuru is the Chamundeswari temple, on top of Chamundi Hill. You will have to climb 1,000 steps to get there. At the base of the stairway stands a 5 m high Nandi (Siva's bull). It was carved out of solid rock.
- The Jaganmohana Palace.
- The Jayalakshmi Vilas.
- Lalitha Mahal.
- The Keshava Temple Somnathapura features beautiful carvings.
- St. Philomena's Church.
- Wesley's Cathedral.
- Karanji Lake is another religious place.
- Another interesting place to visit in Mysuru includes the city's thriving Devaraja Fruit & Vegetable Market. It is in the center of town and all sorts of tasty fruits are sold there that you've probably never seen before.
- The Mysore Zoo was established in 1892.
- The Karanji is a popular recreational destination.
- The Kukkarahalli is also a recreational area.
- Blue Lagoon Lake is a lake with a small island. it was formed, when the KRS water dam was constructed. It is a popular place from where to watch the sunset and sunrise.
- During the 10-day long Dasara Festivals (Dussehra Festivals) in the beginning of October an interesting parade of richly caparisoned elephants, liveried retainers, cavalry, brass bands and flower-bedecked images of Hindu deities processes through town.

Around Mysuru
- Not far from Mysuru is the Mandya District's Krishnarajasagar Dam with its adjoining Brindavan Gardens. It is the place, where a musical fountain show is held every evening.
- The Ranganathaswamy Temple is in nearby Srirangapatna, which is also in the Mandya District.
- Other historical places in the vicinity include Somanathapura and Talakad.
- The B.R. Hills and Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta hill, as well as the hill stations of Ooty, Sultan Bathery and Madikeri are not far from Mysuru.
- Mysuru is a good place to stay if you want to visit the Nagarahole National Park, the wildlife sanctuaries at Melkote, Mandya and B.R. Hills and the bird sanctuaries at Ranganathittu and Kokrebellur, both in the Mandya District.
- Bandipur National Park and Mudumalai National Park are both in Tamil Nadu. They are sanctuaries for gaur, chital, elephants, tigers, leopards and other threatened species. The prks are between 60 and 100 km (37 and 62 mi) south of Mysuru.
- Other tourist spots near Mysore include the religious locations of Nanjanagud and Bylakuppe.
- The waterfalls in Shivanasamudra are a popular destination.
Mysuru has bus and train connections with Bangalore, as well as Mumbai, Goa, Chennai and Hyderabad. Hotels and restaurants are widely available in Mysuru. The city is in the foothills of the Chamundi Hills, 140 km (87 mi) southwest of Bangalore and 1,775 km south of Delhi.
