Navala is probably the most picturesque town in Fiji. It is located on the island of Viti Levu, in the scenic Nausori Highlands. It is not far to the east from the country's highest peak, 1,324 m high Tomanivi.
Most buildings in Navala are traditional bures (thatched buildings), unlike most other towns in the country, where most buildings are concrete prefab slabs. These bures are all about the same size and feature a metal post, known as a bou.
Navala's central promenade runs all the way down to the river. This river often floods, which is the cause of Navala's isolation from the rest of the island.
It is polite to meet with the village chief and while you are there you might as well ask him for permission to take some photographs.
Accommodation is available in town. Navala is 75 km northwest of Suva. It is best not to visit Navala on Sundays, as that is a holy day, which the villagers like to spend quietly with their families.
