Newport (Vermont)
The city of Newport is located in the north of the U.S. state of Vermont. The city was founded in 1793 as Pickerel Point, but later its name was changed to Newport. It grew rapidly after the arrival of the railroad in 1863.
Many of Newport's original buildings have burned down, or were demolished and do not exist anymore. Some extant historic buildings include:
- The Orleans county courthouse dates from 1886.
- The federal courthouse was built in 1904.
- The Goodrich Memorial Library was built in 1899.
- St. Mary Star of the Sea is a Catholic church that was completed in 1877.
There are several hotels and restaurants in Newport. The city sits on Lake Memphremagog, 55 km northeast from Montpelier and not far from the Canadian border.
