Ouarzazate, or Warzāzāt, had existed as a small village since the 16th century, but it was the French who really expanded it to serve as the regional administrative and garrison center. They also built the église Saint Therese (Saint Therese church) in 1931. Although most buildings in Ouarzazate are not very old, you'll be surprised how derelict many of the narrow streets in the Taourirt Kasbah have already become. The kasbah was mainly built of rammed earth.

Straight opposite the entrance to the Kasbah is the artisans' complex where various handicrafts are sold. The town itself is not all that special, but the route from Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka Pass is just an experience on its own.

There are many hotels in town, as well as a camping ground, not far from the zoo. Restaurants and bars are also easily found. There is an airport north of town and the bus station is on Boulevard Mohammed V. Ouarzazate is a good place to stay if you want to explore the nearby Drâa Valley, or the fortified village of Aït Benhaddou.

The best way to explore that interesting area is by car, which can be rented in town. Ouarzazate is 345 km southeast of Rabat.
