The Kahuzi-Biéga National Park, or Hifadhi ya Taifa ya Kahuzi-Biega, was originally created in 1970 on a 600 km² large area between Bukavu and Goma to preserve the habitat of the plains gorilla. In 1976 the park was extended to 6,000 km².

Apart from the gorillas, animals that roam the park include antelope, buffalo, chimpanzee, elephant, leopard, mongoose, monkey and serval, as well as numerous bird species. 3,308 m high Mount Kahuzi with is the park's highest peak. Most of the year it rains quite a lot, but in June, July and August it is fairly dry.

iN the lower areas of the park there grows a lot of dense rainforest, but higher up the mountain slopes there are bamboo forests and alpine meadows. Most animal species live in the rainforest areas, so they are difficult to see.

The gorillas however are such an important tourist attraction, that the trackers usually know where they can be found. Because of its popularity, trips to the gorillas should be booked in advance. Trips include guides and trackers. You should bring good shoes and clothing, because of the high average rainfall throughout the year the ground is often soaking and muddy. The usual starting point for trips to the gorillas is Station Tshivanga. You can get there by taxi from Bukavu via Miti. There is some accommodation at the park entrance, but you'll have to bring your own food and drinks.

Parc National de Kahuzi-Biéga is not far from the western bank of Lake Kivu and the Rwandan border, some 1,500 km northeast from Kinshasa.
