The Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês (Peneda-Gerês National Park) is a wilderness with a spectacular scenery. The park is often referred to as just Gerês. It was created in 1971 in the north of Portugal and straddles the Spanish border.

The northern part of the park is connected to the Spanish natural park of Baixa Limia-Serra do Xurés. Together the parks form the UNESCO biosphere reserve of Gerês-Xurés.

Peneda-Gerês got its name from the two granite massifs of Serra da Peneda and Serra do Gerês, which lie within the park. The area has been inhabited since ancient times and it features several megalithic structures and Roman remains.

Peneda-Gerês boasts a wide variety of animals and plants and the park is excellent for hiking. There are several places where horses and canoes can be hired.

There are several campsites in the park. The hiking trail are well-marked, so it is relatively easy to find the most interesting spots, including the castros at Castro Laboreiro and Calcedónia and the monastery at Pitões das Júnias.

At the village of Senhora da Peneda and São Bento da Porta Aberta you can see several shrines. Small, traditional granite granaries, known as espigueiros, are located in the villages of Soajo and Lindoso.
