The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary encompasses 777 km² of jungle in southern India. The artificial Periyar Lake was created by the British in 1895 to provide water to Madurai and covers 26 km². The park is a good place to escape the hassles the come with traveling through India. Animals that roam Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary include antelopes, bison, elephants, langurs, several leopards, monkeys, sambars, some tigers, wild boars and a wide variety of birds.

Interesting jungle walks are available, as well as accommodation, but you can also stay in the nearby towns of Kumily and Thekkady. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is 2060 km south of Delhi.
