Ponta do Pargo
The village of Ponta do Pargo was named for the headland west of it. That headland in turn was named for the dolphins, which were frequently seen offshore. It is the westernmost tip of Madeira. Ponta do Pargo is a quite place.
Points of interest
- Capela do Nossa Senhora do Amparo (Chapel of Our Lady of Amparo) was built in 1960.
- The Igresia do São Pedro (Church of Saint Peter) was once a chapel dedicated to Saint Peter. It was reconstructed in 1620. In 1851, it was restored.
- The Centro CĂvico da Ponta do Pargo (Ponta do Pargo Civic Center) opened in 2006. The center houses a health center, the Junta de Freguesia, Casa do Povo, a day center, social services, social security centers and a gymnasium.
- The Parochial Church in front of the civic center was inaugurated around the same time.
- The Ponta do Pargo lighthouse is located on top of a 290 m high rocky cliff escarpment called Ponta Vigia. The lighhouse was erected in 1922 and t is located 2 km to the west of town.
- The miradouro is a viewpoint not far from town that offers nice views over the Atlantic Ocean.
Every year in September, the apple fair is celebrated there. Accommodation is available in town. Ponta do Pargo is 35 km northwest from Funchal.
