Port Saint johns is a little rural town at the mouth of the Umzimvubu River in the Transkei region of the Eastern Cape province, 670 km south of Pretoria. Most of its population is black and the town has an easy-going, relaxed atmosphere. Many South African artists and painters have set up their workshops in the area around Port Saint Johns.
The surrounding area consists of hills, covered with lush, tropical vegetation. There are numerous cliffs and several nice beaches on the Indian Ocean coast, both to the north and south of town. The Pondoland Marine Protected Area covers 1,380 km² of ocean along the Wild Coast.
About 7 km south of town is the small Silaka Nature Reserve, where you can see otter and white-breasted cormorant.
Port Saint Johns is about halfway between East London and Durban and has bus connection with both cities.
There are several hotels and restaurants in town, as well as a nice beach. The Coffee Bay Trail is a five-day hike that runs from Port Saint Johns to Coffee Bay.
