Puri is an Orissan coastal resort and one of the four holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites in India. The center of religious things is the massive Jagannath Temple, but that can only be visited if you're a Hindu. Opposite the street is a library from where you'll have a good view over the temple.

During the months of June and July, Puri is filled with hundreds of thousands of pilgrims who come to attend the Rath Yatra Festival. The festival includes huge raths (or carriages) that are used to 'drag' images of Jagannath and his brother and sister from the temple. The rest of the year people visit Puri mainly to enjoy the city's beautiful sandy beach. Westerners sunbathe, while Indian pilgrims bathe according to ritual customs.

About 33 kilometers northeast of Puri is the 13th-century sun temple of Konark. It was built as a chariot for the sun god, Surya and has 24 enormous stone wheels, as well as seven horses and it is adorned with erotic carvings.

Accommodation is available in Puri, but during the Rath Yatra Festival it is very difficult to find a room. There are numerous restaurants scattered all over the city. Puri is 1300 km southeast of Delhi.
