The area around present-day Qaqortoq has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Qaqortoq was previously known as Julianehåb. It is a small harbor town on Greenland's southern tip. During the summer the surrounding area is covered with a colorful sea of wildflowers.

Points of interest

Qaqortoq is an excelent place to stay if you want to make treks into the surrounding area. Trails run up Peter's Cairn, as well as to the Tasersuaq lake. It is also possible to walk to the town of Igaliku.

Just south of Qaqortoq are the Hvalsey ruins, the largest and best preserved Norse ruins in Greenland. It is thought that Hvalsey was a place, where witches were burned in the beginning of the 15th century, or at least that is suggested in the antique Icelandic annals of Flateyjarbók.

Qaqortoq has air and ferry connections with several other places in Greenland. Qaqortoq is 480 km southeast of Nuuk and the entire strip along the coast is excellent for trekking.
