Points of interest
- Qaqortoq boasts the oldest fountain in Greenland, known as Mindebrønden. It was constructed in 1932 and it depicts whales spouting water out of their blowholes.
- The Qaqortoq museum has a nice exhibition on Greenland's indigenous cultures. It is housed in a former blacksmith's shop that was built in 1804.
- Also in Qaqortoq is the giant Stone & Man sculpture that was hewn out of natural rock formations by Ake Høegh. The Stone & Man project consists of some 40 sculptures.
- The oldest building in Qaqortoq is a black-tarred log that was built in 1797. It was originally assembled in Denmark, then dismantled and shipped to Qaqortoq, where it was reassembled.
Qaqortoq is an excelent place to stay if you want to make treks into the surrounding area. Trails run up Peter's Cairn, as well as to the Tasersuaq lake. It is also possible to walk to the town of Igaliku.
Just south of Qaqortoq are the Hvalsey ruins, the largest and best preserved Norse ruins in Greenland. It is thought that Hvalsey was a place, where witches were burned in the beginning of the 15th century, or at least that is suggested in the antique Icelandic annals of Flateyjarbók.
Qaqortoq has air and ferry connections with several other places in Greenland. Qaqortoq is 480 km southeast of Nuuk and the entire strip along the coast is excellent for trekking.
