The Route de la Trace is a national road (RN 3) that roughly follows a trail that was blazed into the mountains north of Fort-de-France by Jesuits during the 17th century. The trail is known as Trace des Jésuites. It winds through a rainforest and along the eastern side of the volcanic Pitons du Carbet. There are several picturesque waterfalls along the trail. According to legend, the road zig-zags, because of the Jesuits' fondness for rum.
