Sosúa is known for its marvellous, wide sandy beach. The United Fruit Company owned the area around Sosúa until the end of the 1920s, when dictator Rafael Trujillo bought up the land cheaply and sold it to Jewish organizations in the U.S. at a huge profit. These Jewish groups were trying to secure land, for Jews fleeing the anti-Semitic developments in central Europe. In 1940, around 350 Jewish families were relocated to Sosúa.

They tried to develop an agricultural product that could survive Sosúa's tropical climate, as well as the long journey to Santo Domingo, from where it would be shipped abroad. The Jews raised livestock for milk, manufactured cheese, sausages and other products and built a well-functioning distribution system.

Everything went fine until the 1960s, when peasants began squatting on the farmland, rendering it useless for grazing. The police refused to offer any help and the Jews gradually emigrated to the U.S. and Israel. Nowadays only a handful remains, but their history is displayed in the interesting Jewish Community Museum. The community also retains a synagogue in Sosúa.

There are fantastic scuba diving opportunities around Sosúa and all sorts of facilities are available. You will find many hotels and restaurants in town as well.

Sosúa i divided into 3 sections:

• El Batey is the main tourist section. It sits to the east of the main beach.
• Los Charamicos is located on the western end of the beach.
• Sosúa Abajo is situated to the north of the other 2 sections.

Sosúa is on the Amber Coast in the north of the Dominican Republic, 155 km northwest of Santo Domingo.
