Subic Bay used to be a U.S. naval base until the Philippine government decided not to extend the Military Base Agreement in 1992.

The base used to cover a huge area, most of which consisted of virgin rainforest that the Americans used for survival training. Nowadays the area is open to tourists.

Subic Bay is excellent for scuba diving. Across the ocean floor some 20 wrecks are strewn, of which the best one is the wreck of the USS New York that was sunk by the Japanese in 1941. It lies at a depth of 27 m (89 ft).

Subic Bay can be reached by taking a bus from Manila to Olongapo, a trip that takes two to three hours. From Olongapo it's another 12 km (8 mi) by jeepney to Subic. It is also possible to fly there.
