The confluence of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers has innumerable mouths that form the world's largest delta. The Sunderbans Tiger Reserve used to be known as Sunderbans Wildlife Sanctuary and covers 2,585 km² of mangrove swamps in this delta.

The park is home to one of the largest tiger populations in India and was designated a world heritage site by the UNESCO in 1987. Apart from some 300 tigers, there are also monkeys, spotted deer, wild pigs, salt-water crocodile and numerous bird species in the park. The Sunderbans Wildlife Sanctuary is an excellent place to visit if you want some peace and quiet after spending several days in India's frenetic cities.

Tours to the park can be arranged in Kolkata (Calcutta) and the journey there invoves local boats and cycle-rickshaws and is fun.
