Gunung Rinjani National Park was established in 1997 to protect the area around Gunung Rinjani (Mount Rinjani)
. The park covers 41,330 hectares (159.6 sq mi), but there is a buffer zone of protected forest around the park, which is even larger, covering 66,000 hectares (250 sq mi).

The park is home to a number of endemic plant and animal species.
