The Taos Pueblo is a spectacular example of traditional Indian adobe architecture. The settlement dates from around 1450 A.D. and can be seen as a forerunner of modern apartment buildings. The pueblo consists of several large, multi-storey communal houses. In the first decades of the 20th century, numerous artists were inspired by the town and its striking surroundings. They include D.H. Lawrence, Georgia O'Keeffe and Ansel Adams. Later hippies arrived in large numbers for the same reasons.

Accommodation is available in Taos. The town is in New Mexico, almost 240 km (150 miles) northeast from Albuquerque, via the I-25. TNM&O buses, a subsidiary of Greyhound, ply the route daily.
