Valkenburg
Valkenburg is a town on the Geul river in the southeastern Dutch province of Limburg. It was first documented as Falchenberch in 1041. The town is known for its marl houses (chalk houses) and the beautiful hilly surroundings.
Points of interest- The ruins of Valkenburg castle was originally built as a wooden keep in 1115. It was destroyed in 1122. After that, the castle was rebuilt and destroyed several times throughout its history. The last time it was destroyed, was in 1672, after which it was never rebuilt. It was the only castle in the Netherlands to have been built on a hill.
- Kasteel Genhoes was originally called Alden-Valkenburg. it dates from 1241 and it is surrounded by a moat. The castle was damaged by war in 1575 and restored in 1620. In the 18th century a front building was added, which subsequently burnt down in 1860.
- There are several other castles in the vicinity of Valkenburg, most of which are located along the Geul river. They include the castles of Genhoes and Schaloen.
- The town walls were mostly destroyed, but some sections remain, as well as the 2 city gates of Berkelpoort and Grendelpoort. A 3rd gate, called Geulpoort, was rebuilt in 2014.
- The Kuurpark is a large park. There is a casino in the park.
- The Sprookjesbos (fairytale forest) is an amusement park.
- The Spaans Leenhof is the old court building.
- The Catholic John the Baptist Church has 3 aisles. The oldest part of the building date from the 11th century. The tower was added in the 14th century. In 1984, the church was restored.
- The Gothic Sint Niklaaskerk (Saint Nicolas Church) features late Medieval wood carvings.
- Thermae 2000 is a sauna and wellness resort with thermal baths.
- Several watermills are located in and around Valkenburg.
- The Wilhelminatoren was a 30 m (98 ft) high viewing tower atop a hill. It was connected to Valkenburg by an aerial lift. The tower collapsed in 2025.
- There are several former marl quarries that can be visited on guided tours. They are locally known as the mergelgrotten (marl caves), even though they are man-made. In some of these 'caves' you can see charcoal drawings and marl sculptures. One of the 'caves' has been made to look like a coal mine. You should never explore these 'caves' on your own, as some of them extend deep into the hills and you can get loast easily.
Around Valkenburg- Saint Gerlachus church is in the nearby town of Houthem Sint-Gerlach. It features Baroque frescos painted on marl.
- Valkenburg lies in a hilly region that is perfect for walking, hiking and mountain-biking.
There are several hotels and resaurants in Valkenburg. The town is in the south of the Netherlands, 175 km southeast of Amsterdam.
