Spain's largest mosque (Mezquita) is situated in Córdoba. The building is turned into a church now, but the Moorish and Muslim decorations are still clearly visible, giving it the feeling of a weird mix between the two religions. Inside the mosque the hundreds of red-white arches account for an amazing effect, the outside is very much worn out. Not far from the mosque in the Río Guadalquivir, there is an old water wheel called Molino de la Albolafia. Close to the wheel, a Roman bridge spans the river. On the other side of the river an old defense tower; the Torre de la Calahorra can be visited.
There are numerous churches and museums in Córdoba that are worth a visit. Also part of the city's old defense system is still in tact. Some walls and towers are still in god shape.
Striking are the many small alleyways and streets in the city center. The majority of dwellings have small patios full with flowers.
Not far from Córdoba an Moorish excavation site can be visited at Medina Azahara.
There are many hotels and campsites in and around Córdoba, as well as numerous restaurants, bars and nightclubs. The city has air, rail and road connections with most other places in Spain. Córdoba is 305 km south of Madrid.
