Canterbury Cathedral is probably the most beautiful cathedral in England. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Primate of All England. The cathedral was not built as such, but evolved in stages and reflects several architectural styles. After the martyrdom of Archbishop Thomas à Becket in 1170, people from all over Europe started visiting the cathedral and Canterbury became one of the most important places of pilgrimage in medieval Europe. During WWII Canterbury was heavily damaged by German bombardments, but unfortunately the cathedral survived without a scratch. You will have to pay a fee if you want to enter the cathedral.
Accommodation is widely available in Canterbury. There are also numerous restaurants in town. Canterbury is 95 km southeast of London.
