Clonmacnois is Ireland's most important monastic site. It is located in Offaly County and overlooks the Shannon River from atop a ridge. Clonmacnois' main feature is a walled field that contains numerous ancient churches, high crosses, round towers and graves, most of which are in an excellent condition. The remains give a good idea of what monasteries were like in ancient times.
Low marshy grounds that support many wild plants and a variety of bird life surround the site. There is also a museum, where you can see grave slabs, original crosses and other artifacts that were discovered during excavations.
Accommodation is available in Shannonbridge, which is 7 km (4.3 miles) to the south and the nearest town to Clonmacnois. You can get to Shannonbridge by bus, but from there you'll have to hitch it, or take a taxi to Clonmacnois, as the site is not serviced by public transport.
