Denpasar is the bustling capital of Bali. It has been the center of the island's growth and wealth ever since tourists started arriving on Bali, although Denpasar itself is little visited by travelers and, as a result, retains much of its original atmosphere. The city has pleasant streets, lined with trees, but the traffic, noise and pollution can be quite bad.
There are several interesting sights in Denpasar. The Bali Museum is made up of a series of separate buildings that include magnificent examples of palace and temple architecture. The exhibitions inside include local arts and crafts. Modern art and woodcarvings can be seen at the Abiankapas arts center. Dancing groups and gamelan orchestras perform there frequently.
There are many hotels and restaurants in Denpasar. The city is 970 km east of Jakarta.
