Isle La Motte
photo

Isle La Motte is a 9.7 km (6 miles) long and 3.2 km (2 miles) wide island in Lake Champlain in the northwest of Vermont. The French chose the island as the site for Fort Sainte Anne, which was built in 1666. The fort is the first recorded settlement in Vermont. It remained garrisoned for some time, but was abandoned long before permanent settlement began around 1788. Black marble is quarried on the island.

Accommodation is available in the village of Isle La Motte. The island is 90 km northwest from Montpelier and 740 km north from Washington D.C.
