Liwonde is a well-managed national park in the southern part of the country, 205 km southeast of Lilongwe. The park lies in a beautiful area straddling the Shire River and Lake Malombi. There are many hippos and crocodiles in the river and the park itself has many elephants, antelope and rhino. There are also many bird species. Liwonde National park is only open during the dry season from October to April.
There are a lodge and a campsite near the park's entrance, 4 km east of Liwonde town. They are both open around the year. You can get to Liwonde by bus or train from Lilongwe. From Liwonde to the park's entrance is a 4 km stretch without public transportation.
