Masada
The ruins of the Masada fortress sit atop a sheer-sided plateau on the southwestern shore of the Dead Sea and offer fantastic views over the area. The fort was the final stand of the Zealots, a group of 967 Jewish rebels who rose against the Roman Empire in 66 AD. When defeat was inevitable they withdrew to Masada and took their own lives rather the being captured.
