Mount Shasta
photo

Mount Shasta is a 4,317 m (14,162 feet) high volcanic peak in the Cascade Range of northern California. Mount Shasta has long been extinct. The only volcanic activity is in the form of some hot sulfurous springs near the top.

The mountain was visited around 1827 by British fur trader and explorer Peter Skene Ogden. Long before that, Mount Shasta had spiritual significance for the Klamath and Modoc tribes. In 1987, an assemblage of New Age enthusiasts gathered at the mountain to honor a planetary alignment. Many of them remain in the area today. The resort town of Mount Shasta is at the mountain's southwest foot.

Accommodation and restaurants are available in the town of Mount Shasta. The mountain is 310 km north of Sacramento and 3800 km west of Washington D.C.
