Pokhara is set in some of Nepal's most spectacular surroundings, on the shore of a lovely lake. There is little of interest in Pokhara itself, but the nearby mountains are excellent for trekking.
If you head for the mountains, you can visit some nice Tibetan settlements, a hilltop monastery and the beautiful Devi Falls. The peak of the 1592 m high Sarangkot can be reached on a day walk. Other places that can be reached from Pokhara, within a day, include the limestone caves at Mahendra Gufa and the lakes of Rupa and Begnas Tals. Longer, three to four day treks, including the Annapurna Skyline Trek, are available from Pokhara.
Kathmandu and Pokhara have daily air connections. For the best views of the Himalayan Mountains you should sit on the right-hand side of the plane when you fly from kathmandu to Pokhara. If heading for Kathmandu, you should sit on the left-hand side. Buses also ply the route between the two cities, but that trip takes about eight hours. Pokhara has some of Nepal's best accommodation and restaurants. The city is 140 km northwest of Kathmandu.
