The three islands of the Niuas are Tonga's northernmost island group. Few tourists make the trip to the Niuas, but if you have the chance to go there, you shouldn't miss it. The people on the Niuas are very friendly and the islands boast beautiful beaches.
Niuafo'ou offers good swimming possibilities. The only way to get there is by air, as the island has no safe anchorage.
Niuatoputapu is the largest of the three islands. Its sleepy capital of Hihifo has air connections with Tongatapu and Vava'u.
The island of Tafahi consists of little more than a volcanic cone that can be climbed. It boasts barren lava flows and the Vai Lahi Lake, which is excellent for swimming. You can get to Tafahi by boat from Niuatoputapu.
The Niuas are more than 600 km north of Nuku'alofi.
