Malawi - Economy 1989
top of page

Economy overview: The economy is predominately agricultural and operates under a relatively free-enterprise environment, with about 90% of the population living in rural areas. Agriculture accounts for 40% of GDP and 90% of export revenues. In 1986 the economy deteriorated and GDP declined by 0.3% as a result of depressed international commodity prices, the high production costs of manufactured goods, and higher transportation costs brought about by the civil war in Mozambique. (Malawi is a landlocked country and must now ship goods through Durban, South Africa.) In 1986 the inflation rate rose to 20%.
