Audrey Wheeler was born in Jamaica, but her family moved to Queens, NY, when zhe was still a child. As a teen, she sang in the local choir and was a finalist in the Miss Black America Pageant, as well as a runner-up in the Miss Black Universe contest.

During the 1980's, Audrey Wheeler did background vocals on albums from artists such as Freddie Jackson, Melba Moore, Glenn Jones, D Train, Keith Washington, Najee, Eric Gable, Kashif and Me'lisa Morgan. Audrey sang the lead vocals on most of the 1980's dance band Unlimited Touch releases and Jeff Lorber's Step by step. In 1987, Audrey made her solo debut for Capitol Records with the album "Let it be". Some of the artists she had done background work for, returned the favour and appear in Audrey's album.

Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers established a new BMG-distributed label, called Ear Candy. He was looking for acts and Wheeler, who by now had established a solid reputation as a studio vocalist, was signed to a deal. In 1992, she released the album "I'm yours tonight", but Ear Candy went out of business not long after and Wheeler returned to doing background vocal session and concert work.
